On Saturday I was out with Nicole & Thomas from Switzerland. Nicole & Thomas had already biked the Great Glen Way so they were in good shape and spirits when I met them in the morning. We’d hoped to make a 50km ride but after discussing the route, the terrain and the bikes available to them, decided upon two or three shorter rides for the day.
To start with we headed west along the old road to Balgy. The trails were in fantastic condition with the descending traverse towards Loch Torridon as dry as I have ever ridden it. Once we ducked into the birch wood the trail just got better and better with a new bridge near the end of the loop a welcome surprise.
I love riding the Balgy Loops as you can pick and choose which bits to do, which bits to do again and always there is the sea to mountaintop views of the Big Three Torridon Munros. We returned to the Torridon Inn to have a coffee and discuss the objectives for the afternoon.
Coulin Estate is close to my heart as my grandfather worked there in the 1920s. So I was delighted when Nicole & Thomas chose to ride into this ‘Big Sky’ route. We were all back in time to watch the Women’s x-c Olympic mountain biking.
It was a pleasure to ride with Nicole & Thomas. Although this was our first time meeting I know it will not be the last!
