Cambridge University winter meet 2014

On Tuesday an Wednesday Nathan  and Ian were out with Cambridge University Mountaineering Club for their annual winter meet. With mixed (windy for a change!) weather forecast we headed straight out on Tuesday for an ascent of Cairngorm via 1141. the snow got progressively firmer as we climbed, giving a nice introduction to moving about on steeper snow.

From the summit we had some great conditions to practice winter navigation, walking on bearings and counting paces to find Ciste Mheraid.  This was a great site for learning about self arrest and the apparent highlight for the team – digging holes! With a fine selection of emergency shelters produced!

With 90mph wind forecast for wednesday the decision was made to stay low and explore Gleinn Einach, where we got some spectacular views without getting too battered by the winds.
