Ben, Bobby, Mark and Will enjoyed a wild day learning some winter skills in Coire an Laoigh on Beinn Eighe this Friday. With 80 mph gusts from the west and minus five at 900m we thought this would be a nice sheltered location. We were wrong, violent gusts of wind carrying machinegun fire hail peppered us all day, at times that hail was running off the hill like in rivers filling and covering our newly dug bucket seats in seconds. Strangely enough we had brief periods of calm in between the gusts, which could have tempted the unwary to head for a summit, only to beaten back by the next squall. At 4pm we’d all had enough and headed back down the hill to nurse our stinging faces after learning lots of new things a lot of them taught by the wind.
