Jacobs Edge R/H – icy way…

Today I went climbing with my mate Chris. We did three, or four varied pitches up Jacobs Edge R/H. Great fun and well away from the crowds and some rockfall.

Lean in ‘Lochain

Back across in the Northern Corries on Monday. Very, very lean compared to 2 days ago. The Mess of Pottage in ‘Sneachda looked pretty bare. Gerry and I had intended on Ewen Buttress, or Milky Way but half way up pitch 1 I felt that frozen turf and bare rock was not appropriate on what is supposed to be a II/III traditional mixed route. We moved together up The Couloir instead, before traversing Fiacaill Ridge and across to ‘Sneachda.

Other parties were on Ewen Buttress and something on Fiacaill Buttress.

Coire an t’Sneachda

Today Pete and I headed into Coire an t’Sneachda. Pete had not done much in the way of winter climbing so we had hoped to go for Invernookie but the buttress over there looked pretty black. Instead we had a sociable start on The Slant and then I decided to have a wander around the ground between Hidden Chimney and Jacobs Left-Edge. The highlight was the wall shown in the picture – definitely not grade II. After topping out we did the first pitch of Goat Track Gully but rapped out as I believed that the conditions made it inappropriate… Thanks to Pete for giving me the OMM rucksack to test out this winter.

Right Hand Butress, Fuar Tholl – Moran Mountain New Year Course

Today I was working the first of four days on Martin Moran’s New Year Course. The mountaineering and climbing groups both headed up to the SE cliff of Fuar Tholl. Alex and Martin made ascents of Access Gully with their clients and I led Brian & Karen up a variation on Right Hand Buttress. Click here to see another couple of photos, or visit Martin’s website.

Liathach ascent via Coire Liath.

Around lunchtime I managed to take advantage of a weather window and nipped up the south side of Liathach to see how damaging the thaw has been. The gullies, snowfields and butresses of Coire Liath have often provided a good mountaineering route the the main ridge and Spidean a ‘ Coire Leith. I was not disappointed today, either. After a wee scramble through the rock band I was able to climb the gully leading up to where ‘Way Up’ grade I, also hits the main ridge. This popular route also looks complete, just as Martin Moran said in his blog on the 26th, it just depends on what the next thaw does…

The forecast was for more unpleasantness later in the afternoon so I made sure to be down in good time via, what we call in the rescue team, ‘The Escapte Chute’. There was plenty of daylight left so I used another rescue team route to save the legs from a pounding on the normal route down.

(No) Way Out (for his car)…

My mate could not get up the hill from his village this morning so I was left to go out on my own. To prepare for various things I decided to solo an easy buttress route on the Meall Gorm crags above the Bealach na Ba road. Lucky for me I managed to drive as far as the Sword of Gideon carpark and after the route my descent took me straight back there as well. Way Out II provided a nice short route before the weather came in. Some soft snow and unfrozen turf but a great wee chimney pitch near the top made up for this!
