Archie Gemmell and The Wall

Climbing 'Archie Gemmell'

The weather did not look that great for our second rock climbing session at Shieldaig.  I thought about cancelling it and John also had second thoughts whilst driving past Loch Maree.  Good job that we didn’t as the 6 youngsters who turned up were keen to learn, or improve their rock climbing skills.  Two of the girls in the group had only ever climbed indoors before and really enjoyed the challenge of real, steep rock on ‘Archie Gemmell’.  So steep in fact they were unable to untie their rope afterwards!  Abseiling down ‘The Wall’ also proved popular with a couple of the boys making three or four descents of this now infamous piece of rock.

Go Mountain Bike at Flowerdale, Gairloch II

Trail cycling at Flowerdale, Gairloch

On Monday the 26th of July another 6 youngsters attended the Go Mountain Bike session at Flowerdale.  This was organised by John Shearer as part of Highland Council’s Summer Programme.  Despite the rain everyone got stuck in and made the best of it.  The 6 bikers explored the network of trails in the trees, around the stables and on the hill.  They also had time to practice front wheels lifts, reading the trail and importantly – how to brake safely.

something a little adventurous…

'it was cool and we had "big" fun'

The Jonker family from the Netherlands were over on one of their Scottish holidays and wanted to try ‘something a little adventurous’…

By the time we had finished our day at Ardheshlaig everyone had tried something new.  For Hugo it was learning how to climb up more than one pitch of rock; Neil can now abseil on his own, Jan has become a lot less anxious about heights and Karin is now inspired to climb on Skye!

Check out one or two photos from today, I hope to post more soon.  Click here to find out about rock climbing or Skye.

Working on front wheel lifts

Three budding mountain bikers joined myself and John for a morning at Flowerdale, Gairloch.  We had a busy time covering almost 10 miles on the network of superb trails here.  As well as riding up and down hill the youngsters also looked at biking skills such as front wheel lifts, rear wheel lifts and different ways of braking.  By the end of the session everyone was biking with more confidence and managed to successful get over obstacles that had caused problems in the morning.

Over the last year or so Andrew Johnston at Gairloch High School has shown me some of the best routes here at Flowerdale – many thanks!

There are still spaces for the Highland Council Summer Programme biking and climbing in two weeks time.  Please telephone Gairloch Leisure Centre on 01445 712345 and ask for details.

‘The Slab’ & ‘The Wall’

This way to 'The Slab'...

Each summer I am fortunate enough to offer abseiling and rock climbing as part of Highland Council’s Summer Programme of activities.

Today, despite damp conditions six youngsters, came to Shieldaig to test themselves on ‘The Slab’ and ‘The Wall’.

Thanks again to John Shearer, Active Schools coordinator for making this possible.

We are trail cycling at Flowerdale, Gairloch tomorrow…
